Lyon and all that jazz

Gérard Vidon, CEO of the Hot Club

As an associative venue since 1948, the Hot Club witnessed the early years of jazz and has welcomed all the great names (its honorary president is Duke Ellington). Still run by a pioneering spirit, this is today the perfect place to discover the talents of tomorrow in a warm and relaxed atmosphere…

In what way is the Hot Club a legendary jazz venue in Lyon?

This was the cradle of jazz in the Rhône-Alpes, shortly after this musical genre arrived in France. Musicians settled here because Paris was occupied. Assisted by a handful of artists from the school of fine arts (Roger Planchon, Jean Vilar, Raoul Bruckert and Jean Janoir), they set up an association and began performing in cellars throughout Lyon.  The Hot Club  welcomed Vian, Cocteau and Greco among others. It has since moved several times but the association's underlying spirit has never changed: to encourage creativity and to play all forms of jazz.

What makes this venue so special?

It's a venue for enthusiasts, managed by around 10 volunteers with an underlying creative spirit. We work with more than 400 musicians who come here to rehearse and to perform concerts. We have one or two top acts each month and the rest of the time there’s a real mix of musicians who come along to express themselves. The result is very successful and the venue has spawned great jazzmen like Michel Petrucciani, Louis Sclavis, Dominique Di Piazza, Lionel Martin, Franck Avitabile or Gaël Horellou! This pioneering and associative spirit can also be seen in the warm and friendly atmosphere to be found here and the interaction between those on stage and in the audience.

How would you describe the performance programme?

We schedule  concerts five times a week , with acts drawn from all aspects of jazz! From swing to electro not forgetting New Orleans, blues, gypsy, free and contemporary. And from time to time we have some outstanding guests… the Hot Club has welcomed none other than Chet Baker, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis and Art Blakey and the Messengers!

Is Lyon a jazz city?

Yes! With all the musicians from the local music academies we can draw upon a huge pool of talent and are fortunate to have some amazing performance venues including  the Périscope , the Clef de Voûte , the ARFI  and le Saint-Georges. The region is also home to some "must see" festivals in Vienne, Vaulx-en-Velin, Grenoble or Rive-de-Gier… What's more, the people running these festivals have almost all passed via the Hot Club at some stage!
