Hip Hop is a way of life lived by many people

22-24 June 2017

Jean-Marc Mougeot, Manager of the Original Festival
It's part of daily life here, whether we're talking about dancing, graffiti, DJing or beatboxing. And so it was completely natural that Lyon should have its own hip-hop festival.

How did the Original Festival come about?

In 1999, we had the idea of launching a hip-hop festival, which was something cruelly lacking here in Lyon. We organised the first one at the Transbordeur, known as the Up Session. In a single evening event, we brought together rappers, dancers (including the now well-known Pockemon Crew) and graffiti artists.
The event was repeated in 2001. In 2003, for the third show, we felt that it would be preferable to find more partners to increase both the artistic content and the length of this festival.

Tell us about the story of Hip Hop in Lyon?

Lyon has always been a centre for hip-hop. Since hip-hop first appeared in France in the 1980s, the city has had more than its fair share of dancers and rappers.
Hip-hop means more than just the number of records sold or the reputation of an artist. It's a lifestyle, enjoyed by a large number of people. It's part of daily life here, whether we're talking about dancing, graffiti, DJing or beatboxing. And so it was completely natural that Lyon should have its own hip-hop festival.
It therefore, lends itself to suggest new ideas and varying the content of the festival, something for which hip-hop is ideally suited. Visitors can attend concerts, dance competitions, films, theatrical performances, dedication sessions and art exhibitions. We even have a hip-hop brunch where visitors can enjoy a snack while listening to the music!

If you could mention only one emblematic Hip Hop venue in Lyon, what would it be?

Very few people in Lyon have not gone past City Hall at least once without coming across the hip-hop dancers at the entrance of the Opera and stopping to admire their technical prowess.

What's your favourite memory of Hip Hop in Lyon?

Without a doubt that would be the De La Soul concert in the Place des Terreaux which attracted 10,000 spectators. This showed that hip-hop in Lyon can bring together large numbers of people having a good time in the city centre. Many people still remember it and still talk to me about it today, sometimes without even knowing that we were the coordinators and promoters of the festival!
